Machine-gun position which is holding the Germans

Bild von National Library of Scotland
British machine-gun position, France, during World War I. There were at least 16 permanent appointments of official war photographers made after 1916. These positions were created in 1916 to gather propaganda in an effort to boost waning war morale. Most of the photographs are no longer associated with their photographer but during this two-year period approximately 40,000 images were captured and stored by the war office.
This would have made ideal propaganda material with its implication of brave British soldiers holding the enemy at bay and keeping the rest of the nation safe.
